I had a really great time at the second Edmonton Startup Weekend. I worked with Jordan Torbiak and Ryan Akerboom to produce a cool little 2d sandbox game prototype in Flash. The concept was a 2d Minecraft-esq game, and I had loads of fun working on it.

It’s a nice little prototype. I noticed that I can create unlimited amounts of grass by laying stones on dirt and lifting them again and I can get as much stone as I want from the level walls… What kind of direction might this game go in if you continue working on it?

Yeah, the tile map doesn’t track layers. So you can keep making grass on dirt just by moving rocks and tress around. Watering the dirt so that grass grows also works. I think there is a way to generate unlimited amounts of anything you want in the game, except for the level walls.
I think there are lots of different places this could go. I could see making a puzzle game, or an adventure/exploration game out of this. Or perhaps just building it out into a more interesting and complex world simulator. But I’m not sure I’ll ever take the time to do more with it.
